Hampton, Va.-The Hampton University volleyball team defeated conference foe Norfolk State, 3-1 (25-30, 30-23, 30-17, 30-25), on Friday night in Hampton.
The Lady Pirates (8-19, 2-7 MEAC) got an outstanding performance from sophomore Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo./Center Senior HS), who posted 15 kills to equal her four-game career-high. Also coming up big was a duo of players who registered double-figure kill totals. Sophomore Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) also recorded 15 kills, while junior Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif. /UC-Riverside) produced 12 put-aways.
In the first set, the Lady Spartans jumped out to an early 12-3 lead and maintained the advantage until midway though the game. With NSU ahead, 17-10, the blue and white began to rally back and cut the Spartan lead to one (24-25) off of a kill by Igehdosa. The teams remained close down the stretch, but NSU closed out the game by scoring six of the last seven points.
During the second game, Hampton quickly built a four-point lead, 7-3, following a kill by Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas,Texas/ Lincoln HS). The Lady Pirates extended the margin to seven, 14-7, after another kill by Hoskins. With the lead still at four, 11-7, NSU used a 5-3 run to come within two (15-17). Nevertheless a kill by Hoskins halted the Spartans’ scoring run as the Pirates pulled out the game two victory.
The blue and white pulled away, 12-6, early in the opening game, but the Lady Spartans rallied back to cut the Pirate lead to four (10-14). Nonetheless, HU went on a 16-7 spurt to claim game three.
Much of the final game was tightly contested, as the teams were knotted at 15. However, Hampton jumped in front with an 11-6 run to take a 26-21 advantage. NSU narrowed the gap to two on twice, but Hampton earned the five-point game-four conquest to win the match.
Norfolk State was led on the night by Karina Moore with 14 kills.
